Compositeur

Composer

In parallel with his work as a cellist, conductor and pedagogue, Eric Feldbusch built a remarkable career as composer. Passionate about composition since early childhood, he was only 10 when he composed his first melody. René Bernier, composer and teacher of dramatic arts at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, member of the Belgian Royal Academy and director of its Fine Arts Class, wrote about him in 1977: “Taught in the precise school of Fernand Quinet for conducting, he also benefited from the latter’s worthy advice in regards to composition”. Eric Feldbusch also enjoyed the advice of Jean Absil and Victor Legley, a close friend.
René Bernier continued: “He established himself as a composer producing abundance, of which the message never leaves you indifferent, and a creator of atmospheres always searching for originality. For him, instinct rules and the audacity of his pen is always justified in the name of emotional shock.”.

156 of his compositions were submitted to SABAM (Belgian association of authors, com-posers and publishers). His abundant and diverse production offers a large variety of instruments and musical styles. It consists of lyrical pieces (many contemporary poems translated into music for soprano or baritone), works for singers and choir, a ballet (Il Diablo Cojuelo), an opera, pieces for symphonic orchestra or string orchestra, for wind instruments, concertos, a large chamber music production (solo, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, etc.) studies for the classes of the Conservatoire, works for violin, viola, piano, horn, harp, flute, clarinet, etc. Feldbusch also composed about thirty works, short pieces or studies for cello solo or cello with accompaniment. Among those titles are a cello concerto and an adaptation for cello and string orchestra (opus 77 n°2) of the “Concerto militaire” opus 18, composed by Servais.

His main source of inspiration has its roots firmly anchored in Eric’s personal past and is influenced by the war (Sh’ma Israël, for strings; Thrène pour une enfance foudroyée, after the work of Evtouchenko, for large orchestra; Mein land for orchestra and voice). Another theme is friendship (Incantation, concerto for violin and orchestra, composed in honour of a deceased friend). Another large source of inspiration was literature and poetry (Trois poêmes de Geo Libbrecht for mixed a cappella choir, which received an award of the Fine Arts Class of the Belgian Royal Academy in 1972). He also illustrated the verses of Federico Garcia Lorca in Stances pour Ignacio Sanchez (his friend who had died in a bullfight). In his musical rendition of the Song of Songs in Cantique des Cantiques he expressed its luxuriousness and fervor with a refined sensibility.

Jacques Leduc, contemporary of Feldbusch and composer, professor at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and director of the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, described Eric’s style as follows: “Although in the beginning of his career, Eric Feldbusch was seduced by serialist techniques, he progressively moved to atonality without any constraints.

His deep knowledge of instrumental and vocal possibilities allowed him to fill pages with brilliant tones, with asserted contrasts and diversified expressions. His numerous orchestral works express a multitude of intentions and characters ranging from tragic severity to entertaining fantasy. Thrène pour une enfance foudroyée is a bitter lamentation with vengeful accents, while Pointes sèches (evoking the industries along the Meuse in Liège and their history) is bathed in an impressionist atmosphere steeped in tenderness and sparkling brilliance”.

Still according to René Bernier, Eric Feldbusch was “enamored by eclecticism, eager of independence; he refused to submit to any chapel, taking over the adage of Darius Milhaud: ‘Freedom first!’ His language full of abrupt intonations, where large musical intervals and screeching notes abound, is intentionally atonal. As far as rhythm is concerned, his re-searched metrics escapes the norm of symmetric patterns. No strict themes, in general, but a work of marquetry rich in ingenuity, where the intensive use of ostinato sounds is at its height and the abstraction of acoustic tachisme is more important than any linear curve. His orchestration is more incisive than colorful, avoids heaviness and searches for new sounds”.

His works, tending mainly either towards the post-serial or post dodecaphonic, or even polytonal, have been played in many countries, including Germany, Poland, France, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Italy, Israel, Canada, Japan, the USA, and Australia and broadcast on different radio and television channels in Belgium, in Europe, in the USA and in Canada.

The Eric Feldbusch Private Foundation holds the chronological manuscript record drawn up by Eric Feldbusch, in which he listed all his compositions, with annotations of places and dates where they were written as well as the name of the orchestra and its conductor or performer. This register includes 172 works composed between 1936 and 2002.

The Foundation owns almost all the original scores and manuscripts of works included in this register.
