The composition is atonal with some tonal melodies and only comprises of a single movement.

“I wanted to express the fear and despair”, says the composer E. Feldbusch, “that filled Ernie the moment he realized that he and his friends, among them many children, were about to be murdered in the gas chamber. I improvised a song on this theme, which is played by the viola, which emphasizes the traditional words of Shêma Israel”.
“This tonal melody serves as the main theme in an adagio for strings written in an atonal, expressionist style.”

Excerpt from the introductory commentary to the recording of this work on DECCA 143. 425 “The contrast between this tonal song, which reflects on one hand the pathos of the lament of the “Jewish soul” in danger and its revolt, and, on the other hand, the atonal accompaniment creates an atmosphere of anxiety, bitterness and rebellion as well as an emotion whose dramatic power is heightened by the musical “description” which evokes an unstoppable march towards death and ends with a reminder of the cries of the victims expressing desperate sadness…”

Article “Julien Ghyoros and harpsichordist Charles Koenig in the newspaper “La Libre Belgique” of 28th February 1978: “The young musicians of the orchestra of the Brussels Conservatory have had no difficulty with the current modern repertoire. The cellist Eric Feldbusch, composer, member of the Queen Elizabeth Trio, conductor of the Brussels Conservatory, was in fact inspired by André Schwarz-Bart’s book “Le dernier des Justes” (The Last of the Just) to compose a work which is a kind of ode to the victims of the concentration camps. All the anguish and human suffering are described in a compact and expressive language. The sliding tonalities as well as the timbre of the viola, which plays the theme of Shêma Israel, and the edgy lines of the strings are simultaneously the expression of despair and the hope that this will never happen again.”

Article “The Orchestra of the Brussels Conservatory and Charles Koenig” in the newspaper Le Soir of 28th February 28, 1978. “In one’s mind, the intensity of Eric Feldbusch’s evocation, and the slow procession towards the communal grave calls out to one’s conscience which is frighteningly isolated. His rigorous way of writing, without decoration or excess, makes this a classic work, which is to say one of those works where the performance takes second place because the emotion it produces paralyzes the listener, and suddenly recalls Penderecki, who works with great orchestral blocks on the same theme (Dies Irae), and does not dwell on the superficial.”
